Some Opisthobranchiate Mollusca from Hawaii!

چکیده
IN THE AT~EMPT to advance our knowledge of the manne Mollusca of the Hawaiian Islands, groups provided with a shell have been among the first to receive attention. Largely for this reason gastropods of the order Prosobranchiata, having conspicuous shells, have become better known than have such forms as belong in the order Opisthobranchiata in which a shell is often absent in the adult.' Such nonshelled forms present difficulty of adequate diagnosis for the establishment of taxonomi~ characters, inasmuch as the' preserved animal soon loses its colors, partly or completely, and becomes in some way distorted because of the contraction of various anatomical parts. Since the works of Gould (1852) and Harper Pease (1860-1872), nothing appears to have been added to' our knowledge of these animals in the Hawaiian area. The present work is but a small part of what needs to be done in this large group of mollusks, which is well represented in Hawaii. Only those forms whose generic position has already been established are dealt with here. No dissection has been attempted, and specific characters have been based on external features only. Severnsia strombeulima n. gen. & sp. from Hawaii (Mollusca, Gastropoda: Caenogastropoda: Eulimidae).
The malacofauna of Hawaii is rather well-known, owing to Kay (1979) and Severns (2011). Both works stand out because they include a large number of the generally under-represented micromollusks (<5 mm). Here a striking new genus and species of a microsnail is reported from that region.

Individuals of Achatina fulica (Bowdich, 1822) were observed preying on veronicellid slugs at two sites on the island of Oahu, Hawaii. As such, the presence of A. fulica may pose a greater threat to terrestrial mollusc conservation than previously imagined. It is our hope that this note provides some impetus for other researchers to explore the possible predation impacts of introduced populatio...
متن کاملTiming and warmth of the Last Interglacial period: new U-series evidence from Hawaii and Bermuda and a new fossil compilation for North America
The timing and duration of the Last Interglacial period have been controversial, with some studies suggesting a relatively short duration that is orbitally forced and others suggesting a long duration that is at most only partly related to orbital forcing. New, high-precison thermal ionization mass spectrometric (TIMS) U-series ages of Last Interglacial corals from Hawaii and Bermuda test these...
متن کاملBiota-sediment accumulation factor and concentration of heavy metals (Hg, Cd, As, Ni, Pb and Cu) in sediments and tissues of Chiton lamyi (Mollusca: Polyplacophora: Chitonidae) in Chabahar Bay, Iran
Heavy metals and some organic substances which are drained into the aquatic environments and cannot be decomposed or eliminated will sink into sediments or find their way into different levels of food chain. Bioaccumulation is the process of continuous deposition and aggregation of these substances into the body tissue of living organisms. Mollusks are remarkably appropriate to be used as bio-i...
متن کاملPreliminary Study on Aquatic Snail Species of Bulinus globosus (Morelet, 1866) (Mollusca: Gastropoda: Planorbidae) from Nankumba Peninsula, Cape Maclear Island, South-East Arm of Lake Malawi
The present investigation of shallow-water gastropod Bulinus globosus is reported on nearshore sites in and around Cape Maclear on the northwestern part of the Nankumba Peninsula, Lake Malawi (part of Lake Malawi National Park) at a depth of 10 M. The present remark focuses on the geographical distribution and habitats of this group and sample have observed in Cape Maclear Island, Republic of M...
